The Madrigal Christmas dinner is Madrigal Singers' premiere singing event a wonderful holiday tradition. This is an incredible opportunity for the community to enjoy the talents of our gifted musicians. It is a time of joy, celebration and fun for the Madrigals!
The first Madrigal dinner was organized by Rachel Kessler in 1968 at the Community Church in Davis. The singers were from an adult choir, directed by Dick Brunelle.
The following year, the adults felt they could not do the program again, so the Madrigal Choir from the High School was asked to sing. They continued the tradition thereafter. The dinner was moved to Veteran’s Memorial in 1975, to Holmes Jr. High in 1976, and to the Emerson Jr. High MPR in 1980. In time, sponsorship shifted from the Community Church to the Madrigal Parents, who became the sole sponsors. This year the event is moving to First Baptist Church in West Davis.
The event has transformed into a major fundraiser, including a Silent Auction, which now covers part of the cost of the yearly Madrigal Trip. This year, the choir will travel to New York City where they will host guest conductors and workshops, watch “La Boheme” and meet with the Metropolitan Opera, and study — by special invitation — with composer/conductor Eric Whitacre at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
Each year, a “High Lord and Lady”, are honored at the dinner: one night a pair of Madrigal Alumni represent all past Madrigals, and the other night, the Madrigal Dinner Chair from 2 years ago and his/her spouse or other choir supporters are honored.
God Save the Queen!
